Fleet of Angels receives prestigious equine award- the first ever ASPCA Equine Welfare Award
MISSION SUMMARY: In early October, 2016, FOA Director Elaine Nash received a call from the SD States Attorney, who asked her to create and manage a large national effort to find adoptive homes for 270 of the 907 starving and neglected horses that they had seized from the ISPMB facility in SD.
By mid-December that goal had been met, even though the extreme winter weather and other factors in SD made normal wild horse management processes almost impossible. Fleet of Angels partnered with Return to Freedom and other equine welfare organizations in a massive effort to raise over $150,000 to pay off a lien the two involved SD counties had on the rest of ISMPB's horses for a hay bill that had accumulated. That effort was successful, and a planned auction of the 600+ horses was cancelled.
In late January, 2017, the State of SD reached a deal with ISPMB to remove all but 20 horses from their control and all the remaining horses (over 600) were turned over to Fleet of Angels.
After adoptinng out as many horses as possible before the end of March, FOA moved the remaining 312 horses from SD to a new FOA adoption hub in Fort Collins, CO, where the effort to care for, feed, adopt, and transport the horses to safe long term homes continues as more horses are adopted and transported to new homes every week. The goal is to have every horse (adopted out in groups of two or more at time) by Thanksgiving, 2017! Teamwork works!

USE FOR EQUINES FROM THE
SLAUGHTER PIPELINE ONLY
Load and Go is a Facebook group that helps network transportation for horses from kill pens, feed lots, or auctions that have not been properly quarantined for 30 days by a qualified QT provider.
FOA does not assist with transport of horses from these locations until they have been properly quarantined for 30 days at a qualified quarantine facility.
"The rate of equine rescues increases substantially when the cost of transortation can be provided at a significantly reduced rate. That is exactly what Fleet of Angels makes possible."

2018! Our sixth year of helping people help horses
FOA's angels have assisted with thousands of life saving missions for at-risk equines
... and we're just getting started!
FOA's generous members offer a variety of lifesaving services for at-risk horses, mules, and donkeys- both wild and domestic, by helping providing transportation that saves them from abuse, abandonment, starvation, or the cruelties of slaughter. We help get newly adopted horses to their new homes.
For horses making long journeys to safe homes, some of our members offer layover accommodations. And, in some cases, FOA members can even provide overnight sleeping quarters for tired drivers who are transporting their equine passengers for long distances.
An army of trailer-owning members are on stand-by to provide transportation for the evacuation of equines from floods, fires, and other natural disasters.
FOA Extended Teams participate with authorities and horse owners by organizing post-disaster equine search and rescue missions, coordinating foster care placement, doing equine fencing and facility repair, coordinating hay drive efforts, and offering other services as needed to save, protect, and care for at-risk equines.
Working through Fleet of Angels is an awesome way to be a good neighbor when you're needed!

*WHAT DO WE CONSIDER AN
'AT-RISK EQUINE'?
An at-risk equine is a horse, pony, mule, or donkey- wild or domestic, that is at risk of losing its life as a victim of abuse or neglect, slaughter, or is in danger due to a natural disaster.
Fleet of Angels is known for helping rescued equines get home, but our Angels are also happy to assist with transporting equines after adoption or purchase from a valid equine rescue or a BLM adoption facility. When an equine is adopted from a rescue, two are actually saved- the one being adopted, and the one who can take its place at the rescue.
Fleet of Angels strongly encourages rescuing or adopting horses that are in your area rather than purchasing kill buyer, feed lot, or auction horses that are a great distance from you.

FOR REGISTERED MEMBERS and RESCUERS ONLY
*Clean loads only
Rescuers who have submitted a Request for Assistance form online can post their transportation needs on this page for FOA transporters who check in to see who needs help, and where.
Transporters can see posts by rescuers who us this page as a tool for finding discount transportation for rescued and adopted equines.
*'Clean' refers to equines that have been properly quarantined after removal from pulic facilities like auctions, feedlots, and kill pens.
